ÖÖD House

Mirror houses combining comfort
with minimal environmental footprint

Estonian-designed mirror houses, offices and saunas at locations worldwide

Inspired by their weekend hiking trips, the brothers Jaak and Andreas Tiik had a vision: to design and build tiny houses for overnight stays that were immersed in remote countryside locations. The cabins would blend in with their natural surroundings, but without compromising on comfort and a sense of relaxation. In 2016, they founded ÖÖD House to meet this market need.

The resulting tiny houses are built around full-steel frames and feature full-height industrial mirror glass on three of their four facades. The mirror surfaces playfully reflect the surrounding landscape and ensure that the visual impact on the surroundings remains minimal, while also providing privacy for those inside. These pre-fabricated houses are right on point with the current trend towards tiny houses, can be installed almost anywhere. They are delivered by truck, and essentially just need to be connected up to the utilities and are then ready to use.

The insulated glass and radiant floor heating keeps the interiors warm, while the mirrored glass reflects 97% of incident UV radiation and thus ensures pleasant indoor temperatures in summertime. The UV film stickers also have the advantage that birds can see the reflected light and won’t hurt themselves by crashing into the ceiling-to-floor mirror surfaces.

Given this emphasis on comfort and minimising environmental impact, both physically and aesthetically, it is no surprise that ÖÖD’s mirror houses make use of pro clima solutions in their building shells. The INTELLO vapour control membrane is used to implement airtightness on the inside. The SOLITEX FRONTA QUATTRO breather membrane is installed as a wrap outside of the thermal insulation, behind the wooden cladding on the non-mirrored exterior walls. The SOLITEX MENTO is used in the flat roof as roofing underlay.

Right from the beginning, ÖÖD has delivered its sleek houses to locations all over the world, including remote spots in Iceland, sunny California and Ghana too. They also partner with their clients to offer a centralised booking service for mirror houses at sites all over Europe and North and Central America, although the focus remains on the Baltic states and Scandinavia.

How is this project implemented?

The internal airtightness of the walls, ceilings and roof was implemented using INTELLO membranes combined with TESCON VANA all-round adhesive tape.

The SOLITEX FRONTA QUATTRO breather membrane was used as a lining behind cladding on the exterior walls.
